Linux
Linux is a UNIX-like operating system. It is gaining in popularity relative to Windows because it is free, it runs well on smaller and older machines, it runs more efficiently on new machines, the open source means bugs are exposed and squashed. It requires somewhat more expertise to install though the gap is no longer all that wide. I have written an essay that would be helpful for anyone installing Red Hat Linux for the first time, or who is new to Unix with a Windows background.
