Soldier Clerks

According to a guy who disarms bombs for the US military, only one in twenty soldiers actually engages in combat. Most cook food, do paperwork, maintain equipment… Compared with WWI (World War I) and WWII (World War II) that is an amazingly high overhead. What then is motivating soldiers to enlist? Presumably they expect something more exciting and bloodthirsty. They know perfectly well playing support does not protect their country in the remotest way. They do have the right to rape and bully without consequences. Perhaps it is just a job of last resort for losers.
