• Dynamic DNS:

  You can have a permanent domain name, even if you host it on your home machine that does not have a stable IP. It is up to you to fill in a form on the DynDNS.org website any time your IP changes. DynDNS notifies the global DNS lookup of the change, and because of the short TTL (Time To Live in cache) of the DNS name, the change effectively propagates though the entire global DNS lookup system in a matter of minutes. Unfortunately, some of the world’s DNS servers run Windows, which fails to track updates. They won’t notice changes until they are periodically rebooted.

  You can automate the process of detecting that your IP has changed and informing them. There is a HTTP GET protocol for informing DynDNS of IP changes and third party software. that implements it.

  You have to update your IP monthly, even just to keep it the same, or your account will be canceled as inactive.

  To your customers, you look like a perfectly ordinary website. There is nothing special they have to do to access you. The main catch is, you are restricted to using one of DynDNS’s free names such as mindprod.dyndns.org for you domain name.

  The disadvantage of doing this is you are advertising your home IP to hackers which makes you more likely to be attacked.

  You can have a permanent domain name of the form above, even if you host your website at an ISP where it has a clumsy name like:
  http://www.oberon.ark.com/~roedy
  Instead, you can have a somewhat shorter name like:
  http://roedy.homelinux.com

• Custom DNS

  is of interest to people who host their own servers at home. It lets you manage the DNS name services, using any domain names you want, not just their 38, with a web based configuration. This means you don’t need to become expert in that arcane art of MX records. You can manage subdomains of your domain. This costs $25.00 USD per year.

• Domain Names

  The DynDNS people also sell traditional domain names ending in .bz .cc .cn .com .info .name .net .org .tv .co.uk .org.uk and .us for $15.00 USD per year though .cc .cn and .tv cost extra.
