Begotten

Here is an email I received in response to one of my essays.

On the Meaning of Begotten

The non-traditional text in the Luke Gospel gives an excellent indication of the meaning of begotten. As indicated in many translations, the western text manuscripts read at Luke 3:22 You are my son, today I have begotten you. (Greek: EGO: SE:MERON GEGENNE:KA SE), spoken on the day of his anointing by John’s baptism! This is the identical phrase used by the Psalmist (David?) in Psalms 2:7 I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee implying the understanding that being anointed makes the anointed one (mashiah) an adopted son of god!

I am astonished at how this fact continues to escape other readers.

I don’t get the significance of this son of stuff. If we are all God’s children, what’s so special about being the son of God? Jesus is sometimes called the son of man. Again, aren’t we all?
