Artificial Children

I have an three objections to creating artificial children. By that I mean technologies that allow women who are infertile or too old to have children to have genetically related children, and to genetically modify or select embryos to improve appearance, intelligence, strength… (I don’t include repairing genetic defects and genetic diseases.)

1. All the global problems of the planet are exacerbated by overpopulation. These technologies are aimed at raising the population.
2. We don’t have enough parents to care for unwanted children as it is. With these technologies we are encouraging vanity and callousness.
3. Parents will do terrible things to their kids, as they have to their dogs warping them to fashion, ignoring the child’s practical comfort and utility. We don’t need a world of Brad Pitt clones or little girls who look like Hello Kitty.
