The Swedish Lie

Almost every day Trump lies that Americans are in imminent danger of being killed by Islamic terrorists. The truth is they are far more likely to be killed in a car or bicycle trip or from taking aspirin. He lies to frighten people into giving up their liberties and money. The fear he generates lets him get away with racist policies, like his Muslim ban from countries who have never sent a terrorist that killed anyone.

You look at what’s happening, We’ve got to keep our country safe. You look at what’s happening in Germany, you look at what’s happening last night in Sweden. Sweden, who would believe this?

But nothing happened in Sweden last night. Trump could not plausibly claim the Swedes were lying about there being no attack, part of an American conspiracy to discredit him, so he had his spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders say:

Mr. Trump did not mean to suggest that a particular attack had happened the night before but rather was talking about crime in general in Sweden. He later said he was referencing a story on FOX about Sweden, that contained no attack, and nothing about immigrants. He made it all up.

If he meant crime in general, he would not have said last night in Sweden. He made up a fictitious attack as he frequently does, forgetting he would be caught by a neutral party and then be forced to use his spokesperson to clumsily cover for his lie.
