Abandoning Trump

Pundits have been claiming that once Trump’s approval numbers dropped low enough, Republican politicians would abandon him in droves. They would try to put distance between themselves and Trump to improve their chances in the midterm elections. This has started to happen:

• Congress, with only two hold outs, voted to increase sanctions on Russia, to punish them for hacking the 2016 election in Trump’s favour, countering Trump’s sanction reductions. The bill includes a provision to block the president from lowering them again. It looks obvious the Soviets hacked the election in return for Trump lowering the sanctions.
• Trump attempted to dismantle Obama’s detente with Cuba using executive orders. Republicans are hosting all manner of bills to increase trade and tourism with Cuba. Trump justfies continued hostility because of the 1962-10-16 Cuban Missile Crisis in the days of John F. Kennedy. The only people who want continued hostilities are elderly Cuban Americans. Other Cuban Americans have already invested in Cuba. They want to be able to visit relatives. They want relatives to visit them. Airlines, hotels and cruise lines have aleady heavily invested in Cuban tourism. They don’t want their investments destroyed.
• After five attempts, Trump still cannot pass his no-care Trumpcare bill. In the latest vote, 9 Republicans voted against him.
• Republicans have been openly criticising Trump for bad-mouthing Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and warning him against firing Sessions.
• Republicans have been openly criticising Anthony Scaramoucci, the new foul-mouthed press secretary.
• Two Republican Senators were caught on tape bad-mouthing Trump.
• Trump lied that he consulted with his generals over the transgender ban. The Pentagon called him on his lie.
