Scientific vs Christian Truth

When a scientist decides if something is true he takes his time.

• He examines the evidence for it being true.
• He examines the evidence for it being false.
• He checks with how well this assertion jibes with things he already knows to be true or false.
• He asks other people why they believe this to be true or false.
• He considers the reliability of the people presenting evidence pro and con.
• Then he estimates the probability that the statement is true. He may well decide he has no idea. He needs further evidence.

On the other hand, the Christian decides by a much simpler process. He consults his gut.

• If it feels warm and fuzzy he decides with absolute certainty the assertion must be true.
• If it feels uncomfortable, he decided with absolute certainty it must be false.
• Sometimes he polls fellow church members for their opinions. He does not ask them why they think that way, or what evidence lead them to that conclusion.

This leads American Christians to some strange conclusions: e.g. that America did not invade Afghanistan or Iraq unprovoked, that American soldiers never killed any children, except a few in accidents, that American soldiers cannot commit war crimes since by definition anything America does is good, that the USA has the most solid economy in the world, that the US military is only used to defend freedom.

Christians deny this basic reality: whether something is true has absolutely nothing to do with whether they wish it were true.
