iPad : Computer Hardware Buyers’ Glossary

the iPad V3 is Apple’s large cellphone that is almost as big as a notebook, but without a cover. It comes in a number of colours. It is intended for general use including book reader, like the Kindle or Nook. It has a 1024 × 768 colour display rather than a black and white e-ink display. The screen is 24.64 cm (9.70 in) diagonal. It has no physical keyboard, though you can key with the touch screen. Apple has so far kept secret how much RAM (Random Access Memory) it has, presumably because it is embarrassingly low. It comes with a 16 GB to 64 GB flash RAM drive. I has a custom 1 GHz dual core processor. It can talk WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) or optionally 3G cellphone. It runs the iPhone OS (Operating System). It is programmed in JavaScript (gag). To use it as a phone, you would probably need a Blue-Tooth headset. The competition is cheaper: Android machines and netbooks. For that money you can get a notebook computer with 4 times the speed and 20 times the capacity and a proper keyboard. You are paying quite a premium for the Apple cachet and the light weight.

Even though this model was released 2012-03-16, it is already obsolete. This is the third generation 16 GB model, black, Wifi a/b/g/n, with 3G connectivity. diagonal: 24.6 cm, 9.7 inches, 1536 × 2014 pixels. This is remarkably high resolution. For comparison, my desktop widescreen desktop monitor is only 1920 × 1200. There is no mass storage as a notebook would have. It makes up for that with connectivity.
