When you create a Thread in Java you have the choice of making it an ordinary user thread of a daemon thread. Java will shut down the JVM (Java Virtual Machine) only when all the user threads have terminated. At that point it will automatically shut down the remaining daemon threads.
In general, a daemon is something that runs in the background, semi-independently of a program, e.g. a Windows service.
