multicasting
Instead of sending an individual packet over the Internet to each interested party, you send a single packet to a group of listeners. Oddly, RealAudio broadcasting and bulk mail don’t make use of this feature. It is not generally supported on the Internet. But it can be useful to allow a group of users to communicate over a LAN (Local Area Network) or a group of programs to communicate within a machine by broadcasting UDP (User Datagram Protocol) datagrams to each other. Multicasting implies UDP, without acks. IPs 224.x.x.x239.x.x.x are reserved for multicasting. To use it to communicate with others on your LAN, your LAN, your router must support multicasting.
