To record audio from you microphone with Microsoft Sound Recorder:

1. Make sure you have an audio input device, such as a microphone, connected to your computer. Make sure you do not have the microphone on mute.
2. Open Sound Recorder by clicking the Start button, click All Programs, Accessories, Sound Recorder.
3. Click Start Recording There is no indication it is actually recording sound.
4. To stop recording audio, click Stop Recording.

This lets you create only *.wma files. You will have to use a tool like Goldwave to convert to other formats.
