Originaly, a sprite was a small image that could be moved around independently, often with hardware, to peform efficient animation in games. Sometimes there was collision detection.
Today it has a different meaning. HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) is not very efficient downloading many small images. You combine them into one big image then in CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) supply offsets to carve the big image into small images.
