TLD (Top Level Domain). The most common domains end in .com which means commercial. This suffix is called the TLD. Other common ones are .org organisation, .edu educational institution, .gov government, .net network and .mil military.

Individual countries use two-letter codes. These codes are similar to the country codes exept the United Kingdom is uk instead of gb. In addition, Ascension island rates a code ac rather than the sh country code. You might also find some obsolete East Timor domains tp instead of the new tl.

These codes are often used in ways that have nothing to do with the designated country. E.g. tv, Tuvalo, is used for television-related websites.

In 2012-06 1400 new TLDs (Top Level Domains) were created, including names like .love and .wow What they need to do is reserve domains of the form registry.xxxx for where you go to register a domain with that TLD.
