Bus Information

This essay is about a suggested student project in Java programming. This essay gives a rough overview of how it might work. It does not describe an actual complete program. I have no source, object, specifications, file layouts or anything else useful to implementing this project. Everything I have to say to help you with this project is written below. I am not prepared to help you implement it; I have too many other projects of my own.

I do contract work for a living, which could include writing a program such as this. However, I don’t do people’s homework for them. That just robs them of an education.

This is a website to offer bus route and schedule information in a more usable format. Let’s look at some of the problems:

Where I live, bus service comes by about every 30 minutes. If I don’t time leaving my apartment carefully I can have a 30-minute wait in the cold. With infrequent service, people tend to avoid the bus. We need to increase public transit usage to reduce the pressure on roads and pollution.
If a miss my bus, what alternatives are there? I have not investigated them.
Bus maps in downtown areas are so crowded you can’t tell which buses go where.
If a bus is delayed, there is no way to inform waiting passengers.

How does it work?

It shows you bus routes in variable resolution so you can zoom in for detail. You don’t have to see other bus routes other than the one of current interest. You might implement this for ordinary browsers and for portable small browsers.
You can show the bus map not as a line, but as a moving dot that follows the route.
It shows you schedule information, in abbreviated form — when it the next bus at a given stop or when is the next bus after a given time.
Now for the hard part. You enter two addresses, and your estimated time of arrival. It then shows you the optimal route to take and when you must leave your dwelling.
