Embedded Editor

This essay does not describe an existing computer program, just one that should exist. This essay is about a suggested student project in Java programming. This essay gives a rough overview of how it might work. I have no source, object, specifications, file layouts or anything else useful to implementing this project. Everything I have to say to help you with this project is written below. I am not prepared to help you implement it; I have too many other projects of my own.

I do contract work for a living, which could include writing a program such as this. However, I don’t do people’s homework for them. That just robs them of an education.

If you have ever used an text editor written in JavaScript on a forum you have likely pulled your hair out in frustration at the ineptitude. This project is to write a generic text editor that can be embedded in any Applet, Java Web Start or Java program to edit text, that might be used in such contexts. It might be used to compose short emails.

It has to be highly configurable, and light weight. Here is a feature list:

Ability to wrap text.
Support for basic editor function, copy/paste, navigation.
Ability to generate plain text, HTML, or restricted HTML.
search/replace
Ability to mark up with fonts, sizes and colours.
Ability to click on links to test them.
Ability to write macros in Java, and hook them in dynamically. This lets the both the embedder and end user extend the editor is extremely custom ways.
Dual window HTML and text. You can’t edit the HTML WYSIWYG-style as your can in Dreamweaver, but you can click in the HTML window and the cursor will move to the corresponding spot in the HTML window. Similarly as the cursor moves in the text window, a cursor moves to the corresponding spot in the HTML rendering window.
