applications: Applications or (apps for short) are programs written for some specific purpose, for example a word processor, a spreadsheet or a desktop publishing program. In contrast, the general purpose program that manages all the applications is called the operating system. Windows-95, Windows 3.1, OS/2, NT, NeXT, Linux, and Unix are common operating systems that all run on PCs.
