network printer : Java Glossary

network printer
A shared printer is one locally attached to a computer, and other remote machines can use it by going through that server machine. A network printer attaches directly to the LAN (Local Area Network). It acts like a small computer/printer combination. The configuration of a network printer is more complicated since it has no keyboard and screen, and does not run under Windows and thus must be configured remotely. But the advantage is it can handle high volumes without dragging down some server computer relaying information to a local printer. Network printers are typically high end PostScript colour lasers.
