Here is an email I received in response to one of my essays.

May I remind you, that you don’t live in the U.S. So you don’t have to worry about the draft in America.

I am also 58 years old in poor health, in no danger of draft by any country. I protest for those stupid enough to get roped into the military either by enlisting or by the coming draft. I also protest on behalf of those killed and maimed by brain-washed soldiers like you.

And according to my brothers, our Canadian allies believe in what needs to be done in Iraq.

There are red necks in Canada too. They are just not nearly as numerous as in the USA.

I am a Marine Vet and would gladly go to Iraq to fight and possibly die, to give them the right and freedom to at least go to school no matter what their sex or religion.

Since the Second World War, the US has bombed China, Korea, Guatemala, Indonesia, Cuba, Guatemala (again), Peru, Laos, Viet Nam, Cambodia, Guatemala (third time lucky), Grenada, Lebanon, Libya, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Iran, Panama, Iraq, Kuwait, Somalia, Bosnia, Afghanistan and Yugoslavia — in that order — and in not a single case did the bombing produce a democratic government as a direct result.

Your sentiments sound noble, but they are completely divorced from the actual motives for war. You are just parroting some very silly propaganda. Bush planned the war even before he got into office to gain control of Iraq’s oil reserves (#2 on the planet). You know damn well the USA would have not invaded had Iraq produced only pickles and lettuce. You forget that the USA helped Saddam to power in the first place and propped him up for years while he committed his atrocties and was a good little puppet. Saddam is on trial for crimes he commmitted in 1982 when the USA was still giving him poison gas on credit. The USA installs dictators and replaces recalcitrant ones. It has not created a democracy since WWII (World War II). The USA is not in the business of creating democracies for altruistic reasons. It just doesn’t happen. Look how much they spent, $300 billion. The USA is the stingiest developed nation when it comes to foreign aid. It is totally out of character to spend stupendous sums like that and sacrfice lives all out of the goodness of its heart.

WMDs (Weapon of Mass Destructions) were just an excuse. When Bush’s phony evidence was discredited, he fell back on the democracy-for-Iraq B.S. because it would sell with idealistic boobs like you. Only 1% of the Iraqis believe him. Bush then proceeded to do everything in his power to delay the elections and install his corrupt dictator Allawi. Bush does not want an independent democratic Iraq. Iraq would then not be under the US thumb. The USA desperately needs Iraq’s oil. That is why they were willing to take a big risk and shove Russia, France and Germany aside from their traditional share of half Iraq’s oil.

It sounds to me, that you are a spoiled brat. And if you don’t get your way, I see you throwing some sort of legal tantrum. You are blinded by your ignorance. You also fail to recognize the freedom you have and the veterans who have fought and died for it.

Yes, WWII vets, but you are nowhere near their league. Today’s soldiers are slimy hired thugs for Exxon. You are fighting against freedom. You are enslaving Iraq and plundering her resources, not just oil. Saddam was captured way back in 2003. If Bush were truly interested in freedom, he would have held an internationally monitored election and left the Iraqis to run their own affairs. Instead, America is as meddling and paternalistic as any colonial power and keeps the war boiling.

You are a coward and an ingrate.

Grateful you tortured, raped, bombed and killed kids? You make me puke. Grateful you have turned the entire Arab world against the west with your Nazi and Shock & Awe tactics? You are a true idiot.

You owe your very existance to the men and women who have fought for the free world that you live in.

That was true in WWII, but today the biggest threat to Canadian sovereignty is the USA.

Maybe and I say maybe, if clowns like yourself got out of the classroom and went to see the the rest of the world (although I wouldn’t advise it right now), you might understand why freedom is something some of us will fight and die for.

There will not be another draft because there are too many people who believe in freedom. And you are not one of them. Try thinking for yourself one time, instead of thinking for others.

You are indulging in wishful thinking. Enlistment rates are down. Re-enlistment rates are down. You can see the desperation with the non-stop enlistment TV ads and all the signup inducements. Bush has lied himself into a corner. He might be forced to withdraw without taking the oil prize. If the war winds down, a draft can be avoided. But if it continues another nine years, as the generals predict, or if Bush pulls some stunt to sell the Iran war, there will be a draft.

P.S. Thank God they didn’t have digital cameras and the Internet for the civil war, WWI (World War I), WWII, etc. those pics would have been ten times worse and ten times more.

There was pretty well no way out of WWII. The Iraq war is 100% optional. All that butchering you so applaud cannot be justified. Would you put up with Russia occupying the USA and killing hundreds of thousands of people so that you could enjoy their form of democracy (and they could gain control of all US natural resources)? That is white-man’s-burden paternalistic crap and excuse for plunder, just as it was in the colonial days.

You have not read a single book, or even read a newspaper article about the Iraq war. Your sole source of information is Pentagon propaganda. You know absolutely nothing about the history of Iraq. No wonder you are so uninformed. That does not excuse you. You are wilfully ignorant. But what is even more contemptible is you imagine you know everything there is to know about the Iraq war.

• You can only be drafted by the country you are a citizen of and since Canada only harbored draft dodgers (along with the Soviet Union, where Clinton went) from Viet Nam, you don’t have to worry about any of your privileged kids going to combat. Yet, I stand amazed at how many Canadian troops are in Iraq and believe in what they are doing. You may have to live another 58 years (and, even though we disagree, I’d wish you could) to understand what is happening in our world right now.
• You protest only to the weak minded fools who have invaded our colleges, high schools and now even grade schools. You want to brain wash everyone into one way of thinking. Common sense is something you have, not something you teach. College has turned into a day care for hippie and yuppie kids whose parents either have no time for them or don’t want them to learn on their own.
• As far as the redneck comment, I would expect that from a spoiled brat liberal, who thinks people are poor if they make less than $100,000 a year.
• Your bombing list was inaccurate, to say the least. Almost every country you listed was either a military or drug war (which I know you are against) strike. Kuwait was only hit to get Iraq out and the Kuwaiti government cleared it. By the way, you missed saying that during WWII, Allied forces bombed Germany (ooh, big one, don’t see how you could’ve forgot!), Austria, France, Italy, North Africa, the British Isles, etc… and by doing that, with our invasion forces at Normandy, we won the war in Europe. And I hope you know how many lives were saved in the Pacific campaign by dropping the A-bomb.(Millions) But, you think we should all be speaking German and Japanese and that all Jews and Africans should be dead or enslaved.
• You are obviously quoting a book called Motives for War, which does not suprise me, since you live in a fictional life anyway. You have never seen military duty or even civil unjust as I have. You hide behind the curtain of freedom provided to you by my brothers in arms (here’s your opening to call me sexist). And when something like 2001-09-11 happens, you stick your head out and scream for justice. But when the cost of that justice is announced, you crawl back into your hole and disappear until you can find something else to bitch about. It is people like you that the terrorists hate. And it is people like me who want to protect you from the terrorists.
• I never forgot who helped Iraq during the Iran/Iraq war you stupid shit! Saddam was in control well before that. Check your history dummy.
• Between the government and the citizens of the U.S., we send more economic, medical, food and personel help than most other continents combined.
• As you know, I am a Marine Vet, I still give to charity and would still, gladly, go to Iraq. Not to kill or be in combat, but to protect the rights of the Iraqi people to go to school, vote and just live free. I think the men, women and children over there deserve that. (I don’t think you do). Do you even know how many Iraqis are enlisted in their own police and military? I know you don’t because you already told me you get your info from the newspaper and general media.

  Just because you have killed and I have not, does not make you an expert on whether or when you should kill, just on how to kill. You do not have to be a serial rapist to know that raping children is wrong. You, as a criminal, have a criminal’s warped view. Discounting your crimes is a psychological crutch to deal with your guilt.

You may be surprised to discover many of those links lead to whitehouse.gov or various .mil sites. To convince right wingers, I look for right wing sources wherever possible. And if you find something I say that is not backed up, try Google and if you can’t find it, ask about that particular point and I will research a reference.

• I can’t even believe how ignorant you are, quoting Vanity Fair. You must have been going through some sort of withdrawl symptom from one of the many drugs I KNOW you take, smoke, shoot, lick, etc…
• WMD (Weapon of Mass Destruction) ’s: If your kids have a cookie and they’re not supposed to have a cookie, you take away the cookies. Eventually, they will find th e cookies on their own. Then, you find the cookies, hidden and tell them not to have a cookie without permission again. After that, you notice some cookies missing, you ask the child if they know where the cookies went, they don’t know. You know they have cookies so you look for them in their room, you turn up nothing. Two days later, in another room you find an empty cookie bag. They claim they know nothing about the cookies. But since you didn’t catch them with the cookies in hand, or even in their room, how can you say that they had them, let alone ate them. The moral of the story is, that we all know that since the kids loved cookies, they always had cookies and would go to great lengths to hide them. And we never find them all.
• If you think that only 1% of the Iraqi population is behind the coalition, then you have truly closed your mind to reality.
• Why is it that I know that I know more veterans than you. I would be surprised if you knew more than one who was honorably discharged. And every WWII Vet that I know ( not to mention all of the rest of us ) th inks we are being to soft. I’d ask you to go to a VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) post, but I wouldn’t want my brothers wasting their time over a person who has lost all of their common sense (and probably never had any in the beginning ).
• By calling me rapist, torturer, kid killer, nazi, etc… only makes you worse as a human being. If you could come up with ONE (1) piece of fact, truth, evidence, anything to say that I did what you have accused me of, I get to charge you with the direct killing of Jesus Christ. Not only is there NO WAY for you to back up such horrendous allegations, it just goes to show that you are a 58 year old juvenile.
• I joined a volunteer fire department after my active duty finished. I saw just as bad and sometimes worse things doing that. Your pics on your website are nothing. You should try pulling half burned people out of a car wreck, or picking up little kids arms and legs and even their shoes with their feet still inside. Putting out a house or trailer fire, just to find burned people. IT SUCKS!!! But, then there are the people you help. The person you cut out of a vehicle that looked like a pancake, but because you did what you were trained to do, that person walked away. Or when you cut a hole through a wall or ceiling and pull people from certain death. Or, by God, even giving a kid a teddy bear after a fender bender to make them smile again. You said that I make you puke, I’d like to take you to a mass grave that I saw either in Laos, Cambodia, or Thailand. I’m sure I wouldn’t be the one who made you puke.

  Seeing trauma live is always more gut wrenching that viewing a tiny photo later. Surely the deliberate suffering of the Iraq war engineered for Shock & Awe will easily compete with the accidental suffering where engineers did all in their power to make vehicles safe. You are mistaking the impact of a few photos on my website with reality behind them. You are attempting to minimising the suffering of being covered in white phosphorus or flaming napalm as if were a skinned knee. Get real. You are so sick.

• The sovereignty of Canada is threatened only by American hunters and fishermen ( most of which come from Illinois ).
• Enlistment and re-enlistment are only down in the Army. The Air Force and Navy fluctuate as they always have. But since 1993, when Clinton cut back the numbers of the Army, Navy and Air Force ( he left the Marine Corps alone ), the Marine Corps has had no problem filling its ranks. One of my friends, recently gave up his Staff Sergeant rank in the Army, to become a combat Marine. He dropped five(5) ranks just to be able to go to Iraq to help out. The U.S. Marine Corps is doing just fine. We actually have to turn people away. Once again, you are an idiot for listening to the media and not facts.
• No way out of WWII? We may not have ever entered if it weren’t for Japan’s attack against Pearl Harbor. But, to you, there must have been a conspiracy. You’re just lucky WWI and WWII turned out the way they did, or you would only be a cum smudge at best. By the way, eh. Until terrorists do anything to your country besides use it as a way to the U.S., or steal hockey pucks, HOSE OFF, EH !!!
