gateway: Your ISP’s computer that yours directly connects to. You may do this via dialup or via a permentent Internet connection. If you have a firewall, the firewall acts as the gateway to the machines on your LAN. The gateway is the IP machines on the LAN send their packets to when they want to talk to the outside world. The cable modem itself does not have an IP, thus is not considered to be the gateway.
