Advice to Recruiters

• Is American citizenship required?
• Is it possible to telecommute?
• What is the approximate compensation range?
• What city will you work in? Large US cities have a poor international reputation for safety and cleanliness.
• In as much detail as you can without giving away the name of the employer, what sort of work will you be doing? What is the project? There are ethical concerns, concerns about social responsibility, and of course challenging fun. For people willing to pick up and move to a new continent, theses issues may be much more important than usual.

Advice To Canadians

• Proof of Canadian citizenship.
• Proof of technical degree.
• Job requisition that is specific to what applicant will be doing. Specific language is required; you should check with the INS (Immigration and Naturalization Service).
• Letter of employment from a US company.
• Apply for a TN visa at INS. A TN visa is renewable on a yearly basis.

Advice to Job Applicants

• Focus most of your resume not so much on how wonderful you are, but on how wonderful you think the company is you want to work for. Talk about why of all places in the universe you could work, you most want to work for them.
• Hand deliver your resume. Include a photo with your resume. If you can find any excuse to hang around and make yourself useful that will give you more brownie points than anything. Hiring decisions in small companies are made just as much on your personality as your qualifications.
• Use expensive heavy paper. Use expensive binding.
• Try to find out as much as possible about what they need. Prune your resume of irrelevancies, pad it up on areas important to them. There is almost no point in handing in a completely uncustomised resume.
• In the early part of the interview, take charge. Steer it so that you are asking them questions about whether this job would really be suitable for you. Before you know it, they will be trying desperately to convince you to work for them.
• In the later part of the interview, try to get the conversation around to precisely what work you will be doing. Start discussing your work as if you had already been hired. This impresses them with your get-on-with-it attitude, and subtlely makes them think they already have hired you.
• Freely admit to small faults.
• Avoid asking questions about vacations, coffee breaks or hours of work during the interview. You can safely ask “Will I have access to the computers after hours?”

• I help newbies in newsgroups. I am perceived as competent and co-operative.
• I have a website where I offer information about Java. This makes me an automatic expert.
• I offer free software with source. People can see the quality of my work. It proves I know what I am doing.
• I was on the executive of two different computer clubs.
• I wrote a column for a Canada-wide computer newspaper.
• These are long term strategies, but if you follow them, you won’t have to strugglse to find work.

Advice for the Inexperienced

• You were recently paying huge amounts of money to a school to learn. Now you expect to overnight get paid huge amounts of money to continue your apprenticeship? You won’t really be much use to your employer for yet another year. You must convince your potential employer that you are likely to hang around at least two years so he gets some payback on his investment in educating you. This is one of the reasons why it is so important in your resume to focus on why you want to work at the company.
• Consider a period where you do work for charities for free. You get work experience. Your errors and delays will be forgiven. You will meet some of the wealthy people in your community, and they will see you in a good light. You can gradually work into paying contracts.
• When you work for yourself, clients are far less interested in your past experience. If you don’t perform; they don’t pay. At first, severely underbid to get work. Consider a period of self-employment to gain work experience. Warning, after working for yourself, the restrictions of employment may seem too onerous ever after.
