a *.jpg extension. Unlike *.gif,

never had patent problems. For photographs, JPEGs
are more compact that *.png files but less compact that
WIF (Wavelet Image Files)
files. Compactness is important since it reduces download time over the net.
are not good at line art. There you use *.gif or
2000, *.jp2 files, support transparency, but you don’t
