OpenSSL : Java Glossary



The OpenSSL project is the main supplier of SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) code to the world. The current version is 1.1.0b Last revised/verified: 2016-09-26. Their code is free and open source with an Apache licence. It gained worldwide notoriety when malware attacked it and pretty much shut down most of the Internet for a week.

It implements SSL v2/v3 and TLS (Transport Layer Security) v1. It does not yet support TLS 1.1 RFC 5246 and RFC 6066 or TLS 1.2 RFC 5746.

It is run by a team of 18 volunteers. It is written in C and assembler for a variety of Unix platforms and even Windows.
