A ruler for computer programmers ideally has the following properties:

• 38.10 cm (1¼ ft) long.
• transparent.
• calibrated in cm/mm.
• calibrated in 1/10 inch.
• calibrated in 1/6 or 1/12 inch.
• for durability, markings should be etched, not just painted on.
• the marking should have good contrast.

Such rulers are hard to find in stores. If you ever see one, you might consider buying it to use as a welcome gift to a computer-programming friend.
