a company who patented a scheme call E-stamps for printing US postage on envelopes using an ordinary laser printer. A two dimensional bar code encodes: There is also a FIM (Facing Identification Mark) barcode for sorting mail, and human-readable information such as the amount of postage and the originating city.

The cost is $16.00 USD per month flat fee which includes a digital scale you attach you your computer. You buy postage with your credit card over the Internet. It is not clear if you must be connected to the Internet when printing postage. I suspect you don’t need to be connected except when buying postage. This is less of an issue now nearly everyone has 24/7 Internet access.

I heard there is an equivalent program for Canadian postage, but I could find no mention of it on the official website. I put in an inquiry which was ignored.
