Vmware
Lets you simultaneously run Linux, and various versions of Windows. It also lets you run several copies of the same OS (Operating System) at once. This lets you try out new software on an experimental virtual machine before committing to it. It also lets you clone your entire system on new hardware without having to reformat disks or run low-level software. It is just a file to be copied.

Potentially one virtual copy of the OS could monitor another, checking it for corruption. It would make it much harder for viruses to hide by corrupting system code.

Originally the purpose of VMWare was to let you test new versions of the OS and software simultaneously with the production system without any danger of interference or to run several different OSes simultaneously. Now it is used for much wider array of benefits:
