A few of the common adoments are: Bitstream often adds the BT adoment. Esperanto fonts often add the Eo (the 2-character Esperanto language code) or sudEuro adoment. You can map various CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) attributes bold, italic, font-weight:700 etc. onto specific font variants with the @font-face style tag.

When you buy fonts, you typically buy just the variants you need. You don’t automatically get the bold and italic variants when you buy the base font.
