CORBA

Common Object Request Broker Architecture is the OMG platform-independent technique for programs running on different machines to communicate with each other. Normally you would use lighter weight Java-only RMI, unless you are tying into legacy C++/Corba systems.

There are various ways in Java co-existing with CORBA.

RMI can be persuaded to use CORBA’s low level IIOP protocol.
There are CORBA IDL-to-Java and Java-to-IDL bindings.
There is support for parts of CORBA in J2EE.
