schema : Java Glossary

schema
In SQL (Standard Query Language), schema refers to the organisation of a database, usually described in DDL (Data Definition Language) the DDL. In XML (extensible Markup Language) and HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) a schema as a document that describes what a legitimate document looks like.

The most common schemas are XSD, Relax NG, DTD and Schematron.

The ASP (Association of Shareware Professionals) PAD (Portable Application Description) people have a proprietary XML scheme that has regex expressions to define what each field should look like.
