palette : Java Glossary

palette
A board an artist uses to hold paint. Hence in Java a list of possible colours that could potentially appear in an image or document. Usually this is limited to 32-bit colour: 8-bits of opacity, 8-bits of red, 8-bits of green and 8-bits of blue. More compact images may allow only 64K colours or 256 colours using a colour map to translate with an index lookup table from 16 or 8-bit colour numbers to actual colours.
